Do-it -Yourself Stump Stump Removal

When overseeing your property, do you see, old stumps littering your property?  They are unattractive and putting a plant on an old stump really doesn't do much to add to the beauty of your yard.  They can also be a danger to young children and the elderly.  If you have put off removing stumps because you did not want to pay a stump removal service; think about removing those ugly stumps yourself!  Better yet, talk to you neighbors about renting a stump grinder for the day and make it a week-end project for the guys!


You will need: 

  •     Steel-toed boots
  •     Eye protection
  •     Long sleeved shirt
Contact a the equipment rental companies in your area, to get an idea of what the stump grinders will cost and their specifications.   If you have never removed a stump before, it is advised to rent equipment that has a safety guard on it.  This will protect you from flying stones and debris!

 When removing a tree stump from a healthy tree, it is a little more difficult than  moving a tree stump that is rotten.  I will cost you about $10 per inch to have a professional remove a tree stump for you.

Stump removal can be done by an outside source or you can remove the stump yourself, which isn't that hard as you would think, when you have the proper equipment. 

First of all when having a tree cut down, ask the person cutting down the tree, to cut the tree as low to the ground as you possible can.

To remove a stump you will need to rent a stump grinder from a local hardware stores.   Some larger chains rent stump grinders, but you may have to go to a industrial equipment rental store, to get what you need.

  • Rent a grinder for the height and diameter of the stump you want removed. Make sure the grinder you rent has a skirt to curtail flying debris. If you have never used a stump grinder, get professional help and instructions from a rental store specialist

  • Wear protective gargles, ear plus steel-toed boots and a long sleeved shirt to lessen the possibility of injury. Also remove all stones or large rocks from the immediate area of the stump.

  • Before your start the stump grinder make sure the break is set before you start the machine. Lower the blades in front of the stump before you turn on the stump grinder. Use a side to side swing motion to grind down the stump to the desired level.
